Rating: 3.92/5 from 196 reviews This book to me was very touching and made me cry.Stone Fox shows a great friendship between a boy and his dogI've recently had the chance to pick up and read a great book called Stone Fox. Although it's really small, the book is written extremely well. HARPER TROPHY® published Stone Fox in 1980. What a wonderful book this is, the book was written by John Reynolds Gardiner and illustrated by (not cover) Marcia Sewall. The story in Stone Fox begins with a huge problem, what made me interested in reading it. Little Willy's grandpa is sick. What will Willy do? The old man won't get out of bed. After trying and trying, the boy,Willy, finds out why. The tax collector told Willy grandpa hasn't been paying the taxes for approximately 10 years. Grandpa is giving up on life. Little Willy asks all the people he knew what to do. Some of those people are Doc smith, Hank, Lester, and Mess Williams. They all decided it was best to sell the farm, but Little Willy and his dog Searchlight wouldn't give up. There has to be another way! A little later, miraculously, they found 'The Way'. He happened to be at Lester's General store and saw a poster. The poster said that there was to be a dogsled race at Jackson, Wyoming. Any number of dogs were allowed to enter the race. What a miraculous happening! The prize just happened to be $500! Little Willy and Searchlight took the chance. The two had been through a lot together. They would win even if they had to defeat their adversary, Stone Fox. Stone Fox was a tribe member of the Shoshone Indians. He wanted to win the money so he could buy back land for his tribe. It was said that he never lost a single race. When the day of the race came, Willy was in the lead. Stone Fox was dead last. Who would win? The tragic ending at the end of the race stunned everybody. Searchlight was dead. To everyone's amazement, Stone Fox let Willy carry Searchlight across the finish line. Although this book has many superior parts in this book, my favorite part is in Chapter 10. It was a thrilling part where Searchlight's heart burst. The part where Searchlight died was a miserable section of the book. What I liked about it was that the part was so shocking and unexpected. This section made me think, why did Stone Fox let victory slip away from him and let Willy win. It was out of the ordinary. Anyone who likes amazingly interesting dog stories, would like this book. I would recommend it to them. Stone Fox would amuse them because It's a book always with something happening, except in Ch.8, and never-ending excitement. The dog is amazing and so is the boy, Willy. What will probably catch your attention are the character descriptions, for example the white star on Searchlight's forehead. Since I say it's so interesting, why don't you find out yourself! The RaceThis book was a good book I liked it. This book was about a little boy who lived with his grandpa. He helped his grandpa grow a farm the little boy also had a dog. The grandpa was not up to date with his payment. Like a day later his grandpa was sick and he could not do anything to help his farm. Now to the good part of the book is the end of the book. There was a sled dog race in town and the boy wanted to enter in it so he went to town the next day to sign up for the race. There was added money for the winner. They had to race that day there was a race for youth and for the adults. For the adults you had to pay 100 dollars to get in the race. But they would not let him in the adult race because he was too young and then finally they let him in the race if he had the money. So he went to the bank to check out his money and he got in the race. So the race had started and their was a lot of people enter the race. He started in the back and worked his way to the front until they saw the finish line and it was the boy and stone fox and the boy was in the lead and they were about 100 feet and the boy's dog died while running. But Stone Fox did not pass the finish line he stop his dog and took out his gun and shot it in the air and told everbody to stop and not to pass the boy. He told the boy to pick up the dog and cross the finish line. And the little boy won the race. And he got to pay for his grandpa's farm after he won the money. I would tell someone to read this book because of the race it was a real good long race. | ||||||||||||||||||
Reason one is from my personal experience.When I read this book it was interesting,and had a lot of action,I rated it excelllent.Some of the parts brought me to tears and had an hard impact on me.For some reason I just couldn't what would happen to me if I was in the same situation as Willy.I beleive that this story was so baffling because it showed something that we might not see very often.Ayoung child taking the position of a man and maybe even ding more than he can handle and that's why I chose and love this book.
Reason Two is from student and teacher experience.On the Internet at www.amazon.com I read the e-mail feed back from a teacher that said this"I read this book and loved it so much,I can't harldy wait to read it to my students!"Now to me not any book can impress a teacher to read it to her class but this one did!Also a class of students said:"We all like Stone Fox and recommend it to everyone!A teacher on amazon.com said:"It moved me to tears,and also had an huge impact.Even though not listed under my reasons parents are recognizing the greatness about this book,one parent said this:"It's worth reading,it beacme my son's favorite."Now that shoul be enough to convince you that it is a great book.But I have one more paragraph to convince you.
Reason three is the newspaper ratings.Now you be saying:"Yeh.All that experience stuff is good but where is the editorial side of it.Well I just want you to know this is what the Chicago-Sun-Times said:"This story deserves four stars."Another newspaper The New Yorker said:'A superb piece of storytelling-withut doubt the most exciting and moving book this season.I hope you that because two of the nation's most popular newspapers said that.
In conclusion I want you to know that this book can make you laugh and cry at the same time.Also it shows you about a wonderful moral.That is responsibility,and how a young child can do the things that are expected from a man.That is why I love this book and believe it is wonderful.
