I've read the entire series of Anita Blake books and this was not the best one. That said, I still couldn't put it down. As usual, the story moved from one crisis to the next with very little down time. I don't think that any of L. K. Hamilton's books will ever be considered boring. I don't mind Anita's ever-increasing power or the lack of character development, but I'm hoping the characters and their relationships will be more important in the next installment.

Like many readers, I was disappointed by the anti-climatic ending. I enjoying this series because I never know what's coming next and the resolutions are usually half victories at best. This story wrapped up a little too neatly. My main concern is with the increasing graphic descriptions of sex and torture. I understand that sex and torture is all part of the world that has been created, but I just don't want to know all the details.

Bottom line is that despite the flaws, I still loved the book and the series.

I was dreading reading the latest installment of the Anita Blake series. I had begun to dislike the direction that the heroine was taking. But I read it anyway, and it has left a sour taste in my mouth. Anita Blake has become unrecognizable from the women I first read about in Guilty Pleasures. I Know about character evolvement, but this is unbelievable. Anita Blake former animator and vampire executioner, has become Anita Blake human servant, lupa, bolverk, Nimir Ra, Necromancer, and the savior of all Lycanthrope and Vampire kind. No wonder Richard no longer wanted her. She has become more of a monster than anyone else in the series. And the ardeur has turned a former celibate woman into a complete Whore. After a few chapters I literally had to force my self to continue reading, the main mystery storyline was good it was all the extra things that I couldn't stand. For example *Know it all Anita, Micah, ardeur, Pomme de Sang*. I will never waste another... dollar on another LKH book.

I started the Anita Blake series during my senior year of high school. I was totally hooked. I am now entering my junior year of college, and I have become very disappointed since I read Narcissus in Chains.

The story is full of mindless sex. I enjoy sex in novels; it's great, but most of these sexual scenes are out of nowhere and not tied to the actual plot.

More and more, I can't stand Nathaniel. He's a whiny little baby who looks to Anita for EVERYTHING. It's like someone suddenly yells FREEZE and the plot suddenly halts because Nathaniel needs something. I'm surprised that he isn't dead yet, really.

The villian in this novel was terrible. LKH pushed aside almost all of the plot's mystery so she could present us with smut. Suddenly, as the book is winding down, she has the gang drive over to the club and the gun fight is on. It's just too random. There was no extreme detective work. And LKH presented the villian as though we were supposed to know who it was all along. What the hell?

The series was wonderful when she was animating, solving crimes, and suffering under the weight of the sexual tension. LKH uses the arduer as a poor excuse for all the sex in her novels now.

This is the worst of all the novels in this series in my opinion. I'm going to read Incubus Dreams because I've already been a long time fan, but I don't have much hope for it.
