Ants

Postby hamster on Wed Aug 23, 2006 6:17 pm

I just heard on tv that the collective mass of ants in the world outweighs that of human beings.

Any antly thoughts around here?

Such as: ants wage war, keep slaves and adhere to a rigid caste system. Should the UN be notified?

Don't worry, with the obesity rate growing so fast in the western world, we will easily outweigh the ants, or even the entire earth...

But how best to correct their evil behavior?

Or we could deep fry them and toss them in icing sugar and have them add to our burgeoning fatness. :D

Chances are, we probably already do that from time to time and don't even know it!

I've actually heard of chocolate-covered ants, but have never been offered this apparent delicacy.

I think that, although I'm quite ready to munch on all manner of things, I might prefer my chocolate to be un-anted, and if things must be lodged inside, then let those things be roasted hazelnuts, chewy caramel or candied orange peel.

Our government has a certain quota for the amount of bug body parts that can show up in an inspector's sample before the factory gets in trouble. And who knows what goes on in those fast food places -- we're insane to eat anything that comes out of there.

I'm sure it's similar Down Under.

When it comes to chocolate, I prefer it without a bunch of stuff lodged in as well, be it berry, nut or bug. Just pure, creamy chocolate, thank you. If I wanted dried fruit and nuts, I'd pour a bowl of cereal.

"Then we have number four. Number four: Crunchy Frog."
"Oh, we use only the finest baby frogs, dew-picked and flown from Iraq, cleansed in the finest quality of spring water, lightly killed, and sealed in a succulent, Swiss, quintuple-smooth, treble-milk chocolate envelope, and lovingly frosted with glucose."
"That's as may be, but it's still a frog!"

Ahh, Python. A sketch for every occassion.

Did you know that many species of ant actually build their nests out of their workers? and they also make bridges in the same way. The Eciton burchellii army ant specifcally, I believe.

So an ant nest is rather like an above ground coral atoll?

In so far as it is made up of it's own citezens, yes. But the ant nests are only temporary, moving on after about 28 days, when their soldiers have foraged all of the surrounding area.

When ants attack (lol, that sounds like a baad B movie!), they do so in swarms. hundreds of them will swamp a tarantula or scorpian killing them very quickly. Though reports of ants attacking larger mammals such as humans are highly exaggerated. They only attack people if they feel that they or their colony is threatened.

Come to Australia and accidently step on the wrong ants nests!

Those suckers will swarm all over your legs and BITE! And, that's no exaggeration.

We have some very aggressive large-ish black ants as well as the mighty Bull Ants. Watch where you walk out in the country.

:P
