for me, it seems that the happier I am when awake the worse my dreams are, and vise versa. odd.

I seem to be very lucky in that I almost always enjoy my dreams. I have had nightmares, but I haven't for a while.
As for love, I don't believe I've found it yet, at least none but the unrequited kind, and I don't think that can be true love. I certainly have more bizzare and disturbing dreams when I'm stressed or anxious, so yes, If you feel contented and happy I think you would have better dreams. But it does all depend on the person.
