TOD 2006/03/22 - Hair

Of all the controversial mammalian features of Homo Sapiens, hair is perhaps the oddest.

We love it long on a woman's head. But heaven forbid she should ever have any hair on any other part of her body except her eyebrows. Millions of dollars are spent every year on various painful ways to pretend that the female body is hairless below the aforementioned eyebrow line.

Nature gave men beards. But modern men for the most part have rejected them, and cut and scrape the growth every day. Then again, you have certain religions that demand their men grow beards -- even the Old Testament gets into the debate.

Men feel virile with hairy chests and thick head hair. But the very hormone that got the stuff going, is what takes it away later, at least on the scalp. At about the same time, it sprouts in embarrassing places, such as the nose, ears and back.

And then, what's left turns grey.

Hair

Hair is odd. Every body part of the human have some functions, only hair is completely useless. It's not dense enough to keep warm. Not hard enough to protect. Why does it grow on the head?

Perhaps our body hair was more useful in our more hirsuite distant ancestors, if you believe in evolution. We still get "goosebumps" when we're cold, which is basically hair follicles erecting invisible fur to warm us. Body hair also concentrates certain odors, which we hate these days but which, some of you may be surprised to learn, also play a part in attraction.

I think head hair is nature's gift to us as an attractant for mates, like the crest on a cockatoo or the wattles on a turkey. Useless except for that.

It is indeed odd. But I see how its just old evolutionary stuff showing through, monkey past and all that.

I have a beard! 8)

It certainly is! It's also great for pondering, and twizzling. Very very useful those are, actually - make me cleverer.

The moustache is not as proud, its not very visible (its still there equally, but its blonde)

I aim to one day have a handlebar moustache, like a french man.

A proud and lofty aim, indeed!

If your moustache is blonde then what colour is your beard? You seem to have suggested it may, in fact, be a different hue....

It is, in fact, multi tonal. The sideburns are strawberry blonde, the 'under chin' brown, the 'jaw front' white, and the sides of the 'jaw front' are ginger. Amazing eh o.o
