The ethical plausibility of lol

Postby Bomadeno on Fri Jul 11, 2008 10:29 pm

Is there any justification for using lol? What do you think lol stands for? All my family thought it was for 'lots of love'.

I personally hate people who 'lol', unless they know its mocking other people who use lol. It doesn't make me think the other person is happy, or even laughing. Instead it makes me think they are 'approving my comment as funny in some way', which i find kind of insulting.

I make note to tell people lol sucks - how about everyone else?

I am in agreement
lol meaning to laugh out loud is simply not enough to describe the phenomenon known as laughter

besides there are many kinds of laughs
If you need example listen to the song "I love to Laugh" off of mary poppin's

I believe that saying lol is simply saying that "I found what you have to say as funny however I truly didn't laugh from the depths of my belly and it definitely wasn't something I would giggle at"

The main different kinds of laughing I can think of would be:

Giggling, chuckling, dying of laughter, sudden bursts of laughter, and social laughter. (and tickled laughter)

Social laughter sucks - its so fake and empty.

My favourite kind is dying of laughter, but it can get serious and you can end up struggling to breathe/crying/in serious pain

I don't die of laughter too much... but when I do, I realley do. I can infect other people around me too, which has interesting results. (the best having been in church situations...)
