Well. I will try:

The aim of the game is to left click every square on the playing grid.
By right clicking you mark the mines.

Each left click reveals either a number or a mine. If it a mine, its game over.
If it's a number it tells you how many mines surround that particular square.
When there comes a point that it is certain where a mine is or isn't going to be (using these rules and a lot of logic), you can reveal that square with a left or right click.
If a number is touching the required number of mines, you can left click all the squares around it as there will be no mines in them.
That's the basics, playing faster comes with more practice.

My best time is sub 1 second. I clicked the mine right away. I guess that's one way of winning the game, no?

You can't click the mine first time on the XP version, and no that is not winning as minesweeper sees it, you aren't on the high score board x)

My best time on beginner is 10 seconds, and I was kind of lucky then. I was just going along, playing, when all of the rest of the mines were all together in one place and I suddently won. I wasn't expecting it.

I play Solitaire far more so my minesweeper times are fairly poor.

B - 14

I - 70

E - 269

But did you know that if you left/right click simultaneously on a number when you had marked all its adjacent mines, it quickily reveals all the others around it? But if one of the marked ones is wrong, you loose.
You probably do if your getting times like that, but i only found out fairly recently. (best score on solitaire btw was 7585 in 100 secs (one card draw))

I don't like solitaire points because I'll have a bunch, and then suddenly they go back to zero. Atleast on mine they do. Oh, I lowered my score on beginner to 9 seconds.
