The intention is so spammer would be warned, at least that's the intention. In real life, spammer never bother to read any post.

Cicadas singing in the trees in summer are not a happy thing here in Virginia, because they don't go to bed at night. They scream all night long and it sounds like some kind of Satanic wood elf machinery at work. Forget sleeping out in your backyard if you live near any woods. Plus, when these insecty monsters do leave their forest homes, they affix their scary exoskeletons to anything they please and also conduct their intimate conjugal business in full view of the public.

They're kind of like KISS -- they want to rock and roll all night, and party every day.

Hot chocolate is great unless you burn your tongue, which I always do.

Picnics by the creek are great but that type of grass is a haven for chiggers, so bring the Off and apply it liberally.

There is nothing in the world wrong with white roses, however.

Perhaps our cicadas aren't so noisy and they seem to switch off at night. True re the exoskeletons but they are only attached to tree trunks. I always think they are marvellous - so fragile and beautiful. As our cicadas are high in the gum trees so we aren't privy to any conjugal bliss....

Try sipping your hot chocolate, using your tongue as a stirring stick is not recommened!

What is a chigger?? Another tough Virginian insect??
We apply Aeroguard which must be a version of Off.....
At least if we are out and about in the forests we don't need to worry about being eaten by grizzlies and mountain lions. A bit of insect spray and it's off to the woods we go!

Chiggers are like tiny ticks that burrow into your skin and make you hate life.

Actually, I grow roses and have been pricked many times. I still love them.

I do like hot chocolate in spite of the burn, and grassy picnics in spite of the bugs. I do not like anything about cicadas, including the damage they do to trees, but they're a part of nature and something probably enjoys eating them.


I am not a negative person, in spite of the impression I may have made with the above posts.

No, I've never thought of you as negative - I enjoy reading your posts.

Chiggers sound absolutely ghastly! We have ticks, but they are in the trees and shrubs and rarely bother people. Although you do need to keep an eye on your pets and check for ticks regularly.

Mosquitoes and flies can be pesky outdoors over here - but nothing much else insect-wise. Oh, and ants can be cross if you step on their nests.

We have locusts which pop up every few years and are vile.... but the cicadas are harmless and a much loved part of Xmas. They don't do any damage, just sing in the trees for their very brief lives. And liittle boys love to catch them and chase little girls with them in the playground! We have all different varieties - all are large and the birds feast upon them.

Frogs croak at night and one teeny little green rascal can keep you up for hours!

is absolutely hilarious. Our cicadas are colourful enough and so varied they woud make a great group of punk rockers - so I had an immediate visual image!

It's the roof of my mouth that get's burned by anything hot... so that conjured up another funny vision of you and hot chocolate. You'll have to forgive my laughter.

Roses are divine. I can't grow them in Sydney because the terrace house is wrongly situated for the sun. However, we have bought a house in the country and once we start on the garden, white roses will abound!
I also love the "Double Delight" and "Mr Lincoln" varieties. What do you have?

It always requires a bit of effort, though I should know better, to remind myself that N. American winter traditions are summer events Down Under, and vice versa.

As in cicadas. They're not very colorful out here, by the way.

I have about eight or nine rose bushes, but I don't remember which varieties most of them are, and keeping them alive is a terrible struggle here in Virginia, land of humidity-loving black spot fungus.

Other happy things: The smell of a new book.
A good, weighty magazine wedged amongst the bills in your mail-box -- and an evening free to read it.
The first green sprouts in the springtime.
New socks.
An unexpected compliment.

I love the smell of a new book, I also like the smell of older library books but that might just be me. I also like to get new socks but they usualy get a hole in them the first time a wear them anyway. And who dosnt like to get compliments
